I recently posted a couple of my simmer pot recipes to Twitter, and my favorite comment was “I just know your house smells incredible all the time!” It’s actually true, our house DOES smell incredible (almost) all the time! Not only am I a huge nerd for aesthetics, but I’m also obsessed with smells and using scent to create the ideal mood or environment. I actually panic a little bit when we run out of scented candles.
Smells really influence our mood and certain smells can make us nostalgic. Every holiday season, my dad cooks up some sort of New Mexican dish (tamales and pozole are his favorites) and it brings the feeling of my home state into my parents’ Massachusetts home.
I suffer from a lot of anxiety, and there’s nothing like taking a huge whiff of lavender oil to pull my brain out of that stressful space. Similarly, every time I smell coffee brewing in the morning (get yourself a programmable coffee pot – trust me) it makes it much easier to get out of bed.
These simmer pots are created with the intention of creating the ideal atmosphere in your home. These recipes are by no means a cure for whatever ails you, but they may make things more tolerable. Simmer pots can also be a great way to bring up the humidity level in your home!
I will be periodically adding to this list as I come up with more concoctions. If you try any of these and have suggestions or comments, I would love to hear your thoughts!
Basic Instructions
- Put a large pot with high sides on the stove, fill 2/3 with water, and crank it to high heat.
- As the water comes to a boil, gather your ingredients.
- Once the water has boiled, lower heat to a simmer and add the magic! Stir to make sure nothing sticks to the bottom.
- Simmer for up to 3 hours. Stir occasionally. Make sure to stay near the kitchen in case the pot boils over, especially if you have an unpredictable stove.
